Today, I was looking through some old photo albums and I came across this picture...
This is 'ti doc' circa 1994. I was 5 y.o. and already doing vital signs, lol. If that's not a clear implication of a future physician, then I don't know what is :-)
Medicine is not just some profession to me, it's a way of life. I literally eat, sleep medical stuff. Whether reading up on the latest trends in medicine, studying Anatomy & Physiology, practicing my skills in the clinical setting (i.e. hospital, nursing home, etc.), having an intellectual conversation w/ some colleagues about different medical related topics, watching different medical programs (i.e. Dr. 90210, Vital Signs w/ Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Accent Health Channel, etc.), sharing my experiences w/ you via this blog, and so on and so forth. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE medicine.
A question that I am commonly asked by my peers is: "Steph, how do you do it? How do you deal w/ all the studying and being around sick people all the time?" My response to them is always the same; "simply b/c I love medicine".
Initially, their first response is that of someone whom is puzzled but once I explain the rationale behind why I am the way I am then they understand. With that being said, I'm going to share my secrets to success w/ you.
It begins w/ knowing what you want. Therefore, the first step is: Searching deep inside yourself and finding out what your passion is (i.e. what makes you wake up in the morning? what do you absolutely love? what do you see yourself doing for the rest of your life? what can you not get enough of?) You get me drift? lol :-)
Second step: Immersing yourself in what you love.... becoming an expert 'so to speak' at what you like. I always encourage others to do what they love that way they will be the best that they can be at it. Along w/ this concept includes surrounding yourself w/ people of common interests that share the same passion that you have. Knowledge is not gained by only reading a book. We also learn from one another (i.e. experiences, different point of views, etc.). In addition, networking is very important b/c in this world it's not always about what you know but who you know as well.
Third Step: Self-Motivation...Be your own biggest fan! In order to progress in life, you must have confidence in yourself and in your abilities. No one can stop you from being the best except for yourself. Therefore, it all has to do w/ your mindframe. Think positive! Arrest negative thoughts! Lock them up in a box and throw it along w/ the key in the OCEAN!!! You can do anything you put your mind to. That leads me to the next step.
Fourth step: You must have determination, discipline, and dedication. In high school, I was part of a male leadership group called the T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R. Organization. T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R. is an acronym for 'Talking Openly Growing Educationally Training Honorably Empowering Reasoning'. In this group, we learned a very important concept that I still apply to my life today. It's called DDD's, lol. It stands for determination, discipline and dedication. You must be determined to accomplishing your goal. You must be disciplined in the manner of knowing what you need to do in order to accomplishing your goal and doing it. Lastly, you must be dedicated to accomplishing your goal regardless of any adversities that you may come across. You must persevere and be victorious.
With that being said, I hope this post inspired everyone. If you apply the steps which I have discussed, I guarantee you that you'll see a great change in your life. I look forward to hearing your success stories in the near future :-) Have a wonderful evening! Take care. Peace, Love, and God Bless. This is 'thedoc' and I'm signing out. 1.
i admire your ambition =] You know what you want to do, and you're in the process of making it happen. I took Human Anatomy & Physiology during my first semester of college, and though it was VERY interesting, I couldn't pursue a career in medicine..
ReplyDeletealthough ive always been interested in dermatology..
