The following is a recount of my first day a.k.a. clinical orientation at a new hospital. Enjoy! :-)
Beep! Beep! Beep! (hand slams on snooze button). Yawn!!! (followed by a stretch). I gaze at my clock and it reads: 4:30 am. Initially, my first reaction was to go back to sleep for an extra 15 mins but I said to myself: "Steph, it's time to get up. So, I hop out of my bed as I do every morning and head to my bathroom. Then, I take a nice hot shower. I tell you there's nothing better than a nice hot shower to begin the day. It's sooo soothing, lol. Nevertheless, after the shower I put on my scrubs, head downstairs and head out the house b/c I had an approx 1 hr drive to the hospital. The drive was like any other drive...smooth sailin', lol. That's the best way & the only way to ride on the 95. I tell you there's no better way to start the day than to the sweet & sultry sounds of Sade cruisin' at 70 mph, lol. Anyways, I arrived at the off-site hospital parking at about 6:45 am. From there, a shuttle bus took me to the hospital. Apparently, there's not enough parking at the hospital for employees and students hence that's why I had to take the shuttle bus, lol. Anywho, I arrived at the hospital at approx 7am. When I arrived, I went to the cafteria to meet up w/ my fellow colleagues and discuss medical stuff over a nice healthy & hearty breakfast. At about 7:45 am I was given an itenarary for the day. As I glanced at the schedule for the day, I couldn't help but be excited about meeting the staff, learning how to use the computer to view meds, labs and so on and so forth. The day began w/ a short meeting to discuss hospital polices, HIPPA, etc. Following the metting, we had a scavenger hunt on the two Med-Surg floors in which we were going to be working at. It was a way to get oriented w/ where things were on the floor as well as the staff in which we'll be working alongside. I must tell you this hospital had to be one of the most organized facilities that I've had the pleasure to intern at. Everthing was in order, labeled, color coded, etc. You name it, they had it. I was very happy b/c I've had my share of experiences where I had to work w/ limited supplies and I must say it's not fun. I believe that it's always best to have an excess of supllies rather than a limited amount simply b/c you never know what can happen...especially in a hospital setting. After the scavenger hunt, we had a post-conference and shared our thoughts in regards to the facility and to ask any questions. In the end, we all went home early b/c we had a test bright and early in the morning the next day. Go figure, right? I tell you this life isn't for anyone. It takes alot of hard work & determination to make it in the med field but if you're up to the challenge and you put your heart into it, you will definitely make it. So to all those aspiring doctors out there, you have been warned. I'm not saying this to scare you but I'm a strong believer in telling ya'll the truth. The truth is: In order to be a physician, you have to make alot of sacrifices and put in alot of hours of studying. Take me for example...During the week, I wake up 4:30 am; class from 7 am until 7 pm; then, study and go to sleep about 11:30 pm every night. I'm sure alot of you are saying right now that I must be crazy. My response is: Well, I may be a little bit but I absolutely love medicine and those are the measures I'm willing to take in order to achieve. So my question to you is: "What measures are you willing to take to achieve your goals?" Think about it and get back to me!
With that being said, I hope you enjoyed this post. Feel free to share your thoughts and/or leave any comments. I'd love to hear from you. Have a wonderful day! Take care. Peace, Love, and God Bless. This is 'thedoc' and I'm signing out. 1.
